Washing Black Clothes Without Fading

Black is a staple, but it fades fast if washed wrong. Keep your dark pieces looking brand new with these rules.
### Wash inside out
Turning garments inside out protects the outer surface from friction during the cycle — the main cause of fading.
### Cold water, short cycle
Heat opens the dye and strips colour. Always use cold water and a gentle cycle to lock in blackness.
### Use colour protection detergent
A detergent made for dark clothes keeps blacks black. Skip chlorine bleach entirely — it's the fastest route to orange-toned greys.
### Line dry or low heat
Heat is the enemy of dye. Air dry when possible, or tumble on the lowest setting. Remove promptly to avoid wrinkles.
### Wash with like colours
Group all darks together so a stray bright item can't bleed onto your blacks, and wash before it's heavily soiled so less scrubbing is needed.
Follow these and your black wardrobe stays deep and rich for years.
